Essential Professional Skills Series Fall 2023

This intentionally-designed series blended OACD programming with top-rated virtual content to give Pitt trainees access to an expanded set of sessions covering skills that all doctoral students and postdoctoral trainees should learn as an essential part of your professional development (see this stage in the ADAPT model for more information). This series covered a range of topics critical to your success and the foundational content applied across all disciplines.

NPA:  Professional Networking in the Digital Age

Description: In today’s digital world, professional networking has become essential for career success. This workshop will provide participants with valuable insights and practical strategies to navigate the digital landscape and build a strong professional network. Postdocs will learn how to create a compelling online presence that showcases their skills and expertise, attracting relevant connections. They will also discover how to tap into digital networks to uncover job opportunities and foster professional growth.

Presenter: Karin Lawton-Dunn, MS, (she/her/hers), is the senior graduate career specialist in the Graduate College at Iowa State University. She has been in this role for nine years and has 30+ years of experience in K-12 and higher education programs and career coaching. She has presented to various audiences, including graduate students, postdocs, faculty, practitioners, and professionals nationally and internationally.

OACD: Overview of Career Development Resources for Postdocs *RECORDING AVAILABLE*

Description: All postdocs in the schools of the health sciences attend an Orientation to Career Development seminar within the first three months of their training and are introduced to Pitt’s unique model of career development, that is, A Developmental Approach to Professional Training (ADAPT). This overview of career development resources was designed as a refresher that covered the vast career development resources at your disposal and provided an opportunity for the group to discuss their career development challenges, opportunities, and plans with fellow postdocs.

Presenter Bio: Darlene F. Zellers, PhD, is the associate vice chancellor for academic career development, health sciences; director, Office of Academic Career Development (OACD), Health Sciences; director, Center for Postdoctoral Affairs in the Health Sciences; and associate dean for postdoctoral affairs in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In her leadership role with the OACD, she is responsible for developing professional career development programs and services for biomedical scientists and clinical investigators within the University’s six schools of the health sciences (dental medicine, health & rehabilitation sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health). The OACD serves the University’s academic health science community, including graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, clinical fellows, and faculty at every level of experience, by providing full-spectrum academic career development training and support. Regarding postdoctoral affairs, she is additionally responsible for overseeing postdoctoral training, personnel management, and professional career development across the schools of the health sciences.

Three-Session Series Description: Optimize your success as a trainee by developing the skills necessary for decreasing stress and promoting personal wellness! View this three-session, evidence-based series that focuses on self-care with a cohort of your peers and led by Dr. Laura J. Dietz, a licensed clinical psychologist and associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh. This program was developed in 2020 through a Forge Your Own Path grant from the University and piloted with graduate students in SHRS.

  • Session 3: Dec. 11th on "Creating Social Support and a Culture of Self-Care"

Presenter Bio: Laura Dietz, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling and Behavioral Health, and a licensed clinical psychologist. In her current position as a clinical educator and supervisor, Dr. Dietz teaches and trains counseling graduate students to competently administer evidenced-based psychosocial interventions for mental disorders. Her research is centered on developing community-based models to increase access to mental health services in under-represented populations. With her colleague, Dr. Jamie Kulzer, she was co-PI and team lead on the 2020 Forge Your Own Path grant, “The Pitt Personal Wellness Program for Graduate Students in the Health Sciences.” In this role, Dr. Dietz co-developed and delivered the 3, 1-hour courses to graduate students in 5 different programs in the School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) and oversaw program evaluation data collection, analysis, and results. She has developed and maintained relationships with collaborating programs in PA, PT, OT, and in the school of pharmacy, and has advocated for and increased awareness of graduate student mental health and well-being in SHRS and in the University of Pittsburgh community.

BtP: How to Network When You Don't Have a Network

HSLS: PowerPoint for Conference Posters

Description: The instructor will lead attendees through menus and options in PowerPoint that can be utilized to design a conference poster for either print or an online presentation. You will practice choosing sizes, colors, fonts, as well as making margins and aligning boxes to each other. Learn to build your poster using PowerPoint features such as tables, charts, and SmartArt, as well as import images from other sources. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to practice along in PowerPoint on a second screen during this session.

Class materials will be made available to class attendees. This class will be recorded.

NPA:  Leadership and Management in Scholarly Research

Description: Graduate school and postdoctoral training are designed to make you an independent researcher or scientist, ready to tackle pressing questions and drive cutting-edge research. But running your own research projects and leading a team involves more than applying your scientific skills; it requires managing both people and projects. In this workshop we will discuss approaches to being a leader and a manager, and how to guide and mentor the students, postdocs, and staff that will eventually be part of your amazing, successful team!

  • Describe the differences between leadership, project management, and personnel management.
  • Summarize how vision and mission statements help direct successful, strategic leadership.
  • Define directive and supportive behaviors in a leadership context and describe approaches to applying them to the different types of individuals (students, postdocs, staff) that work in research groups.
