The 17th University of Pittsburgh Postdoctoral Research Symposium (previously known as the Postdoctoral Data & Dine Symposium) is a scientific poster session for University of Pittsburgh postdoctoral associates and scholars to present their research to colleagues, faculty, and administrators, while also networking and enjoying hors d'oeuvres with attendees.

View Judging Guidelines

Judging Guidelines:
  • There will be assigned presentation times for judging purposes.
  • Presenters will be notified in advance of their assigned exhibit time and need to be at their poster during that time to be eligible.
  • Awards will be given in the following categories:
  1. Basic Biomedical and Pharmacological Sciences
  2. Behavioral Sciences, Education and Curriculum, and DEI
  3. Cellular and Molecular Biology
  4. Clinical and Surgical Sciences
  5. Engineering, Physical, and Computational Sciences
  • Presenters will have an opportunity to suggest a category when registering. Please contact the UPPDA if you have questions about which category fits your research
  • Posters will be judged by a group of faculty and postdoctoral fellows, although they will not be identified as such while judging.
  • Scoring will be based upon creativity, style, content, impact, presentation, and overall impression.
  • The number of categories and number of awards will be at the discretion of the judges.
  • Award winners will be announced during the reception that follows the poster sessions.
  • Please note: Only University of Pittsburgh Postdoctoral Associates and Postdoctoral Scholars are eligible to win one of the poster awards. Clinical Fellows, Research Associates, Visiting Scholars, or other related training positions are welcome to present but will not be judged nor eligible to win a poster award. Also, in cases where there are multiple authors, the poster presenter will receive the poster award.

Symposium Format

The Postdoctoral Research Symposium is a scientific poster session for postdoctoral trainees and a networking event with the University of Pittsburgh community. Two poster sessions, each 45 minutes in length, will take place from 2pm-3:30pm. Networking will occur during and following both poster sessions. Awards will be announced at the end of the symposium.

Guest registration is open to all trainees, colleagues, faculty, and administrators, as well as to area employers. Due to the professional nature of the event, attendance is restricted to adults. Business casual attire is encouraged.

12:00-2:00pm: Poster set-up and check-in
12:00-2:00pm: Guest check-in
2:00-3:30pm: Poster sessions
3:30-5:00pm: Networking and announcement of awards


Abstract Requirements for Posters

Please use the following guidelines as you prepare your abstract:
Microsoft Word Document (.doc, .docz)
Font: Times New Roman, size 12, single spacing, one-inch margins
Length: Abstracts are limited to 1800 characters excluding spaces and should not contain graphs or images.

2nd line: Author(s)- last name, first name (please underline the presenting author's name)
3rd line: Affiliation(s)

Poster Presentation

  1. VERY IMPORTANT: Poster set up and check-in will take place from 12-2pm. Please plan to check in and set up your poster before the start of the first poster session, which begins at 2pm.
    1. Posters themselves should be no larger than 4' high x 6' wide.
    2. Please pin a separate, 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper containing a brief, layperson summary next to your poster. The purpose is to help all attendees, including those outside of your domain, to easily understand your research.
  2. You will receive notification regarding which of two poster sessions you are required to be in front of your poster during the symposium. Judging will occur during your assigned time.
