This workshop will enable you to apply essential tools to enhance your
postdoctoral training experience and ensure you reach your professional
goals. A career development plan represents a collaborative strategy of
mentoring between a faculty mentor and postdoc at the initial stage of
postdoctoral training. The expectations and milestones along the path to
reaching career objectives will be outlined to ensure successful career
development and a productive postdoctoral training experience for both
the mentor and postdoc. Effective October 2011, postdocs in the schools
of the health sciences are required to complete an annual career
development plan.

as an industry researcher. Dr. Alan Sved, Professor and Chairman of the
Neuroscience department at the University of Pittsburgh, and Dr. Dottie
Clower, Vice President of Research and Development and Operations of
Cohera Medical, Inc. will talk about a typical day in their chosen

Career advancement requires more than a superb knowledge base and
exceptional skills. In order to grow a career, we must also know how to
cultivate and maintain relationships in the workplace, and understand
and adapt to the cultural norms of the setting in which we work. This
workshop focuses on three critical areas that support professional
growth:
• Basic standards of workplace etiquette for lab courtesy, meetings,
meals, phone and email; greetings and introductions; appropriate attire
for lab and business settings.
• Strategies for communicating confidently with various levels; key
elements of speaking clearly; benefits of and practical applications of
good listening skills.
• Understanding of cultural differences and behavior styles and
expectations; how to make intercultural communication and interactions
both appropriate and effective.
