History

The concept of mentoring is literally ancient, dating back to Homer's Greek epic, The Odyssey. The original Mentor, from the story, was described as the "wise and trusted counselor" to Odysseus and his family. The practice of mentoring has gained increasing and deserved attention in recent years, and very notably in academics.

So who or what is a mentor, and what does he or she do?
