Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty

Overview

Course Mission

The University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Course in Scientific Management and Leadership is an interactive learning forum designed to equip new investigators - including senior postdoctoral and clinical fellows and junior faculty - with the knowledge and professional competencies to lead innovative and productive research programs.

Course Goals

•  Develop skills to set up and run effective and successful scientific laboratories or research programs

•  Promote collaboration with peers, senior investigators, and research staff

•  Foster innovation and teamwork

•  Discover and develop leadership skills to increase personal and team productivity

Course Format

This course will be highly interactive and will involve individual and group exercises as well as lectures and discussions. Due to the extensive material to be covered, participants will be required to complete two personal inventory assessments prior to the workshop: the Myers-Brigg and the 360° Skillscope. The Myers-Brigg Assessment needs to be completed by you and is designed to measure people in four areas:

  • How a person relates to others
  • How a person takes in information
  • How a person makes decisions
  • How a person orders their life

The 360° Skillscope Assessment  provides insightful feedback on job-related strengths and weaknesses and requires completion by you AND by some of your colleagues and supervisors. (Further information will be provided upon acceptance into the course.) During the last day of the course, break-out sessions that focus on several research issues will be held.

Application Process

There is a brief on-line application to be completed by the applicant. The application can be accessed and submitted here.

Nomination Process

Applicants for this course must be nominated by their Department Chair, Institute or Center Director, or their Dean through a letter of nomination. This letter will be submitted electronically along with the application. Because this is an electronic process, letters of nomination will be verified prior to acceptance into the course.
