If you are starting out in your academic career and looking for direction or you want to discover and develop your leadership skills or learn how to work effectively in collaborative teams, the Course in Scientific Management and Leadership will introduce you to and provide you with some of the skills required for successful career development in both basic and clinical research and education.

OVERVIEW

This interactive two-day workshop is designed for postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows and junior faculty in the Schools of the Health Sciences and will provide insight into leadership and team building as well as direction on how to develop and manage a scientific laboratory or research program, how to improve productivity, and how to enhance creativity and innovation in your research or classroom environment. This course provides a unique opportunity to work with a diverse and multidisciplinary group of senior faculty and to network with colleagues from across the Schools of the Health Sciences.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. Senior postdoctoral or clinical fellow or junior faculty in the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences beginning a career in basic, clinical or transitional research or education.
  2. Clear commitment to an academic career.
  3. Strength of personal statement indicating how your participation in this course will help to advance your academic career as an investigator or educator. Please indicate if you currently have independent funding and if so, indicate the source of the funding.
  4. Commitment to attending the entire course.
  5. Letter of nomination from Division Chief, Department Chair, Dean, or Institute Director stating a commitment to the applicant’s career and support for the applicant to attend the entire course. Letters should indicate the source of payment for the course, e.g., departmental funds, professional development funds, personal funds.

    Nomination letters should be addressed to Course Director, Course in Scientific Management and Leadership Admissions Committee, University of Pittsburgh, 301 Scaife Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, and uploaded as a PDF or Word document as part of the application process.
