Mentored Career Development Awards
K Awards
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) primary grant mechanism for supporting the career advancement of biomedical investigators is the Mentored Career Development Award (a.k.a. K award). Federally funded K awards provide a wide range of funding opportunities for both basic scientists and clinicians interested in basic, clinical, or patient-oriented research. K awards provide partial salary and research support so that junior investigators may have protected time (a minimum of 75 percent effort) to develop their research interests and careers. Compared to R01 grants, K grants have relatively high success rates, thereby providing better odds for the new investigator.
New Investigators Program
The NIH is especially committed to supporting the careers of new
investigators.
Early career scientists are encouraged to take advantage of the numerous
NIH
resources dedicated to the needs of new investigators in biomedical
research.
