Mentoring Success Stories

Eric J. Lenze, MD, Charles F. Reynolds III, MD, and Ellen M. Whyte, MD

Department of Psychiatry
School of Medicine

Charles Reynolds, professor of psychiatry, neurology, and neuroscience, not only serves as director of the Intervention Research Center for Late Life Mood Disorders, but also has secured and directs a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) training grant entitled "Training the Next Generation of Mental Health Researchers." Here Reynolds meets with two of his mentees, Eric Lenze and Ellen Whyte—both assistant professors of psychiatry and, under Reynolds' sponsorship, recipients of prestigious five-year NIMH K23 career development awards.

According to Lenze, "Good mentorship may be the most important element for successful career development in academics." Whyte, who will be transitioning from clinical practice to research in part through Reynolds' guidance, adds, "I don't think it is possible to launch a successful research career without excellent mentorship."
