Mentoring Success Stories

Roberta B. Ness, MD, MPH, and Catherine L. Haggerty, PhD, MPH

Graduate School of Public Health

According to postdoctoral fellow Catherine Haggerty, "Mentorship is essential for the young scientist." Fortunately, Roberta Ness, her primary mentor and professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology, lists mentorship as "absolutely one of the favorite parts" of her job. Under Ness's guidance, Haggerty was awarded an NIH National Research Service Award (NRSA) fellowship in August 2001, and in 2003 she submitted her first NIH R01 grant and also received the Department of Epidemiology Women's Health Scholar Award.

"People make science," Ness says, "and mentoring is part of our legacy as academics—to develop the next generation of scientists." Indeed, as Haggerty—who also earned her Master of Public Health and PhD from Pitt—has accepted a tenure-track faculty position within the Department of Epidemiology, effective July 2004.
