Mentoring Success Stories
James M. Roberts, MD, and Melissa A. McNeil, MD
Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health
As director of Magee-Womens Research Institute, James Roberts, professor
and vice-chair (research) of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology,
and Reproductive Sciences,
oversees a diverse institutional mission
and scholarly membership that spans women's health research from
bench to bedside. But as principal investigator of the "Building Interdisciplinary
Research Careers in Women's Health Program" (BIRCWH), he and Program
Director Melissa McNeil, professor, Department of Medicine, are also
looking ahead, helping to train the next generation of women's health
researchers.
Through a multidisciplinary approach that includes faculty from throughout the University of Pittsburgh (the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and the Graduate School of Public Health), dedicated research funding, and structured mentor-mentee relationships, this novel program is providing an even greater opportunity for young faculty to become excellent scholars and future mentors themselves.
