Mentoring Success Stories

Mandy Garber, MD, and Wishwa N. Kapoor, MD, MPH

Clinical Research Training Program
School of Medicine

As director of the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP), Wishwa Kapoor, Falk Professor of Medicine and chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine, oversees a multidisciplinary consortium of clinical investigators throughout the School of Medicine. Mentorship plays a key role in the program's aim of developing high-quality independent clinical investigators, informing every aspect of a biomedical research career—from selecting projects and obtaining funding to publishing and teaching.

"The expectation is that mentees will eventually become leaders in the areas they'll work in," says Kapoor, who reviews an upcoming project with mentee, physician, and CRTP student Mandy Garber. The CRTP's unique focus on mentorship was especially important to Garber. "In fact," she reports, "that's why I chose the Pitt program over others."
